Most image editing programs have the ability to select a colour on an image and remove it. Doing this with the background of an image will give it a transparent background. However the program must support transparency; for example Paint.NET, Photoshop, and GIMP. In some cases you must also add an alpha channel to the layer you're working on (for example in GIMP, right-click on the layer and select "Add Alpha Channel").
