Anyway, while there's nothing quite like using sprites to make animations (especially considering that I made on recently), you'll get an even bigger sense of freedom by making your own sprites and assets! Sure, you can use as many sprites on the site as you'd like (and several rippers and spriters actually do encourage that), but I think you'll find great satisfaction by making it all from scratch and the great feeling of ownership.
Just do your best with the video skills and sprite creation. That way, we'll help you out if you run into any trouble.
