10. The enemies and bosses of King of the Monsters 2
http://www.spriters-resource.com/arcade/kingofmonsters2/
Still pictures probaby don't do them justice, but they're disgusting and funny in a discomforting kind of way. For ease, you can just check out the sprite sheets, but they're really best when you can see them moving in the game with all the other ridiculous stuff.
9. Twin Victims (Silent Hill 4)
Two baby heads that walk on hands.
8. Bumpty (Yoshi's Island)
I wanted to put Huffin' Puffins, but they're not enemies...
But Bumpties are also very cute. Something about that blank look and that flat, round little beak...
I like a lot of Yoshi's Island enemies, really. Like the Mildes that give you a satisfying pop when you stomp on them, or the Gargantua Blarggs that harrass you, or the Goonies that you hitch a ride on...
7. Andross (Star Fox 64)
Andross's floppy face is just classic. Everything about this fight is so weird and eerie.
I want to meet the kind of person who realized that loose old people skin could make a striking boss design.
Don't panic...
6. Pipo Monkeys (Ape Escape Series)
The variety of monkeys makes them totally charming.
There's a basic set above, but half of their appeal comes from the situations you find them in, which can only be truly captured in the game itself. There are some pretty quirky monkeys out there...
5. Betelgeuse (Shin Megami Tensei II)
Toothy polka dot demon. Sometimes roams as a Beetlejuice.
4. Cagnazzo (Final Fantasy IV)
He's basically a turtle version of Baraka.
His shell and tail remind me of horseshoe crabs, which in turn remind me of gross insect things, and something about seeing a human-like body and awkwardly posed limbs come out from that framework feels unnatural and intimidating.
Notably, the DS version gave him a nasty twitch that I like, but I think the heavy look of the original sprite is good too.
3. Crash Man (Mega Man 2)
This one's not a very complicated choice. I like Mega Man designs, this shade of red, and this helmet...
Drill bombs are pretty cool weapons, too.
No interesting reasons here, sorry.
2. Redead (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time)
Wow! Who knew I liked so much creepy stuff.
Anyway, these guys... I couldn't handle them when I was a child. Besides the fact that they look like voodoo zombies, the way they sit around really builds up the anticipation of having to get past them. Link's journey is no joke.
1. Colossi (Shadow of the Colossus)
I'm not sure if I have any one particular favorite, because they're all so good...
The designs are top-notch and I love the way they move. Again, still shots don't really capture their appeal.
Special mentions to Gaius (above) and Phalanx (below).
