I guess they were going for a Yoshi's Story vibe with the music (what with the silly and squeaky instruments, the recurring melody, and the cutesy nature of it all), but... I don't think they nailed it.
This is Yoshi music. This music is probably iconic by now. I'm pretty sure if you Googled "Good music in SNES Mario games", this would come up.
The thing is, the aesthetic in most of the recent Yoshi games resembles the ones seen in that game, SMW2: Yoshi's Island. The music, however, takes cues from Yoshi's Story...which doesn't match the goofy aesthetic from that game. As a result, the atmosphere is ruined.
Fire Emblem games don't have Advance Wars music: even though it's the same developers and composers, both games have their own atmosphere that's not only conveyed by the graphical style, but the music composition as well.
