I think if you want to be truly loyal to someone, you have to criticize them when they're acting of a character that you think is harmful to themselves or others. Being nice or submissive to someone all the time is a pretty lame way to be loyal, because that doesn't help them grow and might even support their bad behavior. It just seems like you don't actually care enough to make an effort to say what needs to be said, because it's hard to do that. Not that you have to be mean about it. Being controlling isn't good, either.
