Codename Steam doesn't have any similarities with Fire Emblem besides genre... in terms of tone, style, and fundamental gameplay, it's a totally different game and that could very easily turn some people off. I know that the perspective they chose to utilize is not at all advantageous for a turn-based strategy game, which can basically work as a board game.
And Wonderful 101 doesn't have all that much in common with Viewtiful Joe from a gameplay perspective.
I'm not trying to insinuate anything, but from your example you don't really understand why your friends like the games they do (or I assume you would have mentioned it), only that they do like those games. Maybe your one friend likes Fire Emblem for the waifu and the medieval fantasy and the Chess-like gameplay. Maybe your other friend likes Viewtiful Joe for the intense sidescrolling action.
