The purple Link in Four Swords was actually due to the GBA. Since the original GBA didn't have a backlight, yellow tended to look a lot like green. At least that's the explanation I remember. Also the fact that it would look weird with his blonde hair probably had something to do with it.

I would think purple might have a similar problem, potentially looking similar to blue or red (depending on the hue) on the GBA's fuckawful screen.
