Since Brawl we've also seen the Return of Donkey Kong Country. That's one of the reasons why having a new character from a certain franchise is such a big deal. Many hoped the addition of K. Rool to the roster would mean his eventual return to the main series.
This is all theoretical. But having certain characters in the spotlight would spark interest of that series with the mainstream.
