That's pretty much how powerful of a marketing tool Smash is, you think you know Nintendo because of Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, or whatever other big series nintendo has but you find out that there is a lot more behind them once you play Smash.
Yeah, that's...pretty much what Smash has been pushing for since day one, and I could swear this was stated by Sakurai in an interview. More than tout the greatness of Nintendo's existing franchises, it also raised awareness for the more obscure franchises Nintendo has and celebrates them globally. I'd probably argue that most of the new additions to Smash this time around (off the top of my head: Little Mac, Greninja, Duck Hunt, and Cloud) were added to further appeal to Western players - and while of course they're not as obscure as say like...Sukapon or K.Rool, they definitely raise awareness to classics from Nintendo's library [except for Cloud, but you probably figured out who that appeals to]
Like, a majority of the teenagers that are recme's age have probably never played the original Duck Hunt (and probably never will play it with the NES Zapper) but their inclusion in the new Smash game has probably raised curiosity to seek out and play the original game. :V
