I hope it's not too late to chime in oops but
yo i like this post a lot. i wish i could take this post out to dinner or at least get coffee with it sometime
though my two cents, a premise more similar to the feel of Ratchet and Clank (basically imagine Banjo-Kazooie with weapons used to solve puzzles and, more linear than something like Banjo...oh yeah, and the only collectibles be ammo, currency and maybe nice collectibles. a basic crafting system for upgrading weapons would be neat, too) would actually kick a huge amount of butt. Classes would still be great - like it'd be cool to go through a game like Ratchet and Clank as literally Fox McCloud from Star Fox Adventures (a staff wielder)
but like, literally take elements from other platformers/action RPGs and give the engine its own unique feel so at least the gameplay remains fresh (plus...it's like. original-feeling and can be $$$ monetized $$$)

But drop the Mario franchise, make this your own brainchild and go crazy with the creativity. Allow your team to be creative and don't tie them down to an already established IP (also by making this your own you have no chance of getting a cease and desist letter. Granted Nintendo really doesn't send those out but eh it's bound to happen and it'd be a shame to have worked so hard for literally nothing).
