I'm sorry, but doesn't making it popular mean you can talk about it more than having it to die as a hidden relic of sorts?
well, this is open to debate, but the problem is these days, especially, when something becomes popular, it gets milked dry. sure, being popular sounds great, but the problem is that the popularity consumes any and all of the quality that actually got it there. So, we end-up with a ton of crappy merchandise, sometimes with the price driven THROUGH THE ROOF, and the quality of the main item, itself, usually decreases, because now that the fan base is a hype train and not a real, supportive fan base, literally anything goes. Me and my best friend are among the people that consider ourselves to be "True fans" (in fact, I KNOW he's a die-hard), and that said, we want whatever happens to someone or something popular, to be done with dignity and honor. The reason people get their panties in a knot when stuff becomes popular is because fame corrupts just as much as money and power do. It is undeniable that many franchises and IP's have been, are being, and shall continue to be, milked bone-dry in an effort to make as much money as humanly possible from them. The quality just...dies, when this happens. fame is good until it destroys the soul of what or whom it brought-up.
I have already told several people that if I can manage NOT to be corrupted by wealth, fame, and power, if I get a successful IP and/or company started, that on my death... I want all of those assets released to public domain. I want my company shut-down, effective immediately. I would rather see what I worked so hard to achieve, or even accomplished in my lifetime, wither and die with its dignity intact, than to slowly be converted to a soulless zombie by mass-marketing and fame. Everything I do, and everything I plan to do, is done, and shall be done with quality in mind. When I create or do something with a half-assed amount of effort or quality, it bothers me. I don't mass-produce garbage, I take pride in what I do, and aim for perfection. When I write a program, I lay the code out in the best way I know to at the time. If I learn a better way to do it, I might try to either re-make it, or improve it. When I do a piece of art, I put the best effort and quality into it that I can. In either case, when I feel something just isn't working-out, I either stall the project for an indefinite amount of time, or I cancel it. This is why I need extremely high levels of motivation to work on the bulk of my projects. Some are tedious "git 'er done!" things, and others are high-maintenance obligations that must be very carefully and meticulously handled, in order to work-out as intended, or remotely close to it. It takes high levels of motivation to grind-through a repetitive list of tasks. It takes an insane amount of motivation to complete serious projects, because I don't like rushing the job, or taking the easy way out, if quality may suffer for it. Now, hypothetically speaking, I create a successful IP, and sell it to Disney. You can bet your ass I'm going to be majorly pissed if they just use it for marketing, and don't put the same kind of effort and love, and pride into it that I did. Any true fan of mine, who sees what I created for its vision, its soul, and ultimately, what it stands for, will have the same reaction. When something becomes too popular: the "fanbase" , and "owners/creators" only see "hey, this exists, it's cool, let's [throw money into it for no real reason]/[make tons of money from it]!"
tl;dr:
popularity is useful, and good, in the right amounts, and when carefully monitored. But, when it is left uncontrolled, or simply breaks free of any controls, it becomes a kind of poison. Basically, "Too much of a good thing". It can safely be described as a double-edged sword. These days, most of what or who become "famous" or "popular", either gets marketed into oblivion, or overwhelmed and consumed by just how much attention they/it get. There are a lot of bad things that popularity can do, don't forget this!
