It's also entirely within the realm of possibility that there's no real "native" resolution of the game, depending on how they set up their renderer. They could just be stretching images to fill certain areas without any regard as to how large those images actually are (which would result in a lot of stretching/distortion).
320x200 didn't work out.
About the second part, so what you're saying is that if a background was drawn and has a resolution of 400x300 (for example), and the game is played at 400x300 resolution, the image will still be distorted? Why would they render it like that?
