I make Sonic fan characters all the time. I'm making the more often than anything else lately, due to the positive reception of my, let's say, content. Trust me when I say I put more effort in designing them than just slapping a pair of jeans on a green Sonic.
Making fan art helps me improve through practise. I've started to improve on anatomy, shading and, hold on to your seats, shoe design. I used to make simple boots, but now I'm more accustomed to actually designing these things. I put thought in them. If you happened to have browsed my DeviantArt, you might have come across my latest drawing of Princess (I think I put it here too). The ways in which I've improved are applied to that piece of art.
