Everyone seems really hung up on my phrasing that replacing it would break something. Kosheh was almost on the right track as he at least acknowledged the part of my post where I referenced the animated portion of the image being what we were worried about. Nothing on the site would break if we removed the images entirely or replaced them with versions 5 times their size (though it would look stupid). The animation would just be too irritating to clean up to be worth the time.
When I originally said that, I had actually forgotten that they were two separate images and really just didn't feel like attempting to remove the background from the animation. That said, after looking at it again, I don't think the animated half even has a background (and even if it did, there's only two frames and it likely wouldn't have been that hard to deal with) and I have no idea why the speech bubble does.
So, for one final point of clarification, the reason I wasn't sure we should do anything about this initially is because I'm pretty sure I brought up the same concern when we were re-desigining and there was a reason Dazz didn't want to replace it. But, since I can't think of what that reason was, I went ahead and uploaded the transparent version (which is actually larger and isn't saving us minuscule amounts of space but that's not really a concern).
I'm still curious why only select people were seeing the background though. On every computer, browser, and OS I tried, I was never able to re-create the issue on my end.
