I don't think the graphics are what's supposed to be the selling point. I think it's moreso as a proof of concept to say "Hey look, I managed to write an NES demake of The Witness and get things to actually work" - and that's impressive, especially if it's written in ASM or something. Like, I think that's the entire selling point of this project. It looks like a one-man project so far - like this guy's a programmer first and pixelartist second.
I mean, if you're willing to help him spruce up his game a bit while keeping a general aesthetic that both works on the NES and stays true to The Witness, I'm sure he'd be more than happy to have you on board. This IS a spriting forum and that's our forte, isn't it?
