This might sound patronising but I wouldn't suggest getting a tablet until you've got a pretty good grounding in traditional techniques. It makes using it much easier if you're fairly well practiced with real media.
It does make working digitally an awful lot easier though, even thought it takes some getting used to. It's really nice being able to work digitally but still get a range of tone like you can using pencils :>
Also don't get a really expensive model right off the bat, go for a cheaper model and then work up if you find that you like it.
