Personally, I would say give it a color background that can help people to see the sprites clearer.

The lighter Super Sonic sprites are really hard to look at with the transparent background. I can just barely make out the edges of his quills.

I'd also space out the sprites a little bit more, preferably by about 5-10 pixels.
