How do I correctly "paint" N64 models that use vertex shading??

Hello guys, first of all, i don't know if this is the right place for my question, please correct me if I'm wrong. So, I was trying to rip Mario's head model from Super Mario 64 as a test because i've never done that before. I watched a lot of videos and read many posts related to the subject, but at the end, i followed this Vi 22's tutorial because it's the most recent one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6IEllQvnaA
Everything went right with the model ripping part, I got the model and then opened in Blender. I was already expecting the textures to be messed up, but for my luck, Vi 22 teached how he does to fix it,  first he edits Link's tunic texture brightness and then recolors it with a google drawings tool, making the texture's color very accurate, but the problem is that when I tried to do follow the steps in the texture fixing part ( jump to 9:40) with the only texture that the model has:

it doesn't feel nearly as accurate as it should be:

Then I noticed that here at the forum, they've ripped Mario's model with the textures fixed as well as Banjo's model (from Banjo-Kazooie), I just wanted to learn to do the same instead of asking for people to do it for me, as many games use this type of shading. But I searched in every place of the internet, and I couldn't find a guide that explains how to "paint" N64 models that use vertex shading correctly at all. Could someone who understands about the subject explain to me how do you do it??  Cry Keep in mind that I don't have much experience on this, but I just want to know the right way to do it since I'll use the model for a personal project  Big Grin
