I'm not that experienced with 3D modeling myself, but one tool I've found useful for making low-poly 3D models is Crocotile3D. It's designed to make 3D maps out of 2D tilesheets, but you can make other low-poly models with it as well. Here is a comparison picture of the first time I used Crocotile. The buildings walls and ground where placed just from the tilesheet, but I was also able to easily make the domes, trees, and bushes as well.

Hunter X Hunter is great! I'm hard pressed to think of an action adventure anime with the same feel of Hunter X Hunter off the top of my head that you probably don't know about. A few anime recommendations I do have are Gintama (action comedy), season 1 of The Promised Land (drama), and Log Horizon (fantasy). Feel free to ask if you ever need more recommendations!
