SteamyJ, I contribute at a community effort to remaster / remake OutRun2006 Coast 2 Coast textures / sprites in PC port with OutRun2006Tweaks.
I want to share with you guys what I just learnt, an easy way to extract the alpha channel with Photoshop. So there's no need to use other programs and there's no need to duplicate Layers and merge them multiple times (as this can add pixel artifacts).
I had to extract from the PS2 texture the alpha from the image in Photoshop like this, in 6 steps:
Step 1: Separate alpha from image
Step 2: Alpha channel was created from Layer
Step 3: Show Alpha Channel and hide RGB Channels
Step 4: Menu Image > Adjustments > Levels (CTRL + L)
Step 5: Change Input Levels from 255 to 128 (Tip from @thegreatprophetzarquon)
Step 6: Alpha channel is corrected and now the Layer has the intended transparency (Done!)
