How's a collab meant to be done?

Hi, I just wanted to ask out of sheer curiosity (and that certain sprites of an upcoming sheet are getting difficult to make), How is a collab done for a sheet, specifically ones that are custom/edited. I saw a collab done between two of my favorite spriters, and I wanted to know how it's done and organized.
