As I said before, I think it would be really cool if it happened only when there was a goomba underneath you.

Definitely this. Either that, or not at all.

I like the idea of slowing it down a bit too. Maybe even have it so it only happens when you press a button (like down). Idk. I would actually find it easier (read: safer) to combo without it.

And pleeeeeease make Mario jump (even a little) higher when he's moving. I wouldn't feel so unsafe about jumping pits if he did. ; _ ; I could give you pseudo-code if you want.
