And BMP isn't that bad for sprites. Hecks, GIF also isn't bad, they just aren't really recommended. BMP files often take too much disc space, at least more than for example GIF files or even JPEG files. GIF files only have a color limit of 256 colors (although that's actually not that big an issue, seeing as good sprites and sheets don't exceed this limit). The best option though is PNG, although it tends to bring bigger file sizes with palettes, and messes up palette color order.
