I'm afraid this is begging to be quoted out of context forever.
Also, I don't mean to be really anal, but isn't the teenagers with ridiculous weaponry + monotonous grinding more of a jRPG thing? I mean plenty of western rpgs require griding but I think the HAPPY GO LUCKY TEENAGER SAVES THE WORLD is more of a japanese thing. :c
I do like the idea of the whining/pouting mechanic but it really doesn't strike me as something worth making a whole game out of
Monotonous grinding shows up in all RPGs, Japanese or otherwise, unfortunately. Characters in WRPGs have a whole bunch of other design tropes (especially when dealing with rogues and/or wizards), but WRPGs don't feature on the DS too often. The last one that did was Sonic Chronicles, and the less said about that game, the better. I tried to get into them myself, but I made the bad choice of playing Neverwinter Nights first.
IMO, MWMW should have had a system where you gained the ability to Pout in response to the bullshit you put yourself through. If you're gonna be crazy enough to jump head-first into difficult battles and heavy item collecting, the ability to circumvent it should be a reward, not a necessity.
