Gifs is really not an sprite, sprite is the images what make the character or something else animate...
All base of images...
A good idea, I think its good, is make the sprites from the images, and make this image an GIF, them like that:

Images (every single sprite for animate)
-----
Result (the animated one)
-----

But there is a news, the site support PNG, not GIF ^^
