Photoshop, flash, fireworks, mattes in image effects graphics (Need quick advice)

Thumbs Down
I found sprites of an effects I would like to use.

http://www.spriters-resource.com/pc_comp...heet/15038

The problem is the background, before saving the image I thought it would save as a .psd with a transparent back ground.

This was not the case. The image still has the black background and I don't know how you make it go away.

I put the graphic in its own layer (in photoshop) and turned the layer type to "Linear Dodge (add)" and layer types like it, bit this wont do. Is there a way to take the black background out with out hurting the effect much?

I would also prefer to find a way to import it into flash with out a matte type (the matte are the pixels collared in, in .gif's because gif's can't have half transparent pixels) if not just getting ride of the back ground would help, at least then I can make cut scene and menus with these effects.

Thanks, Nap

i can help if you download gimp.

Open the image (raw, gimp cant load psd)
Go to layer --> transparency --> add alpha channel
Go to the toolbox and click the hand with B/G/R (should be top row)
go back to the sprite, click the background color
click "del" on your keyboard
save as png or gif.
open in photoshop, and it should still be transparent. if not look around in gimp and see if you can find the effect you want.

Thank you so much! Big Grin

I haven't yet been able to duplicate this only using photoshop but this isn't a big loss because I can now import it. Smile

Side note: .gif doesn't work too well. The picture is too high quality and .gifs need a matte. But exporting it as a .tif works just fine.

PNGs support the alpha channel that you're looking for. Save in PNG format.

if whatever you're eventually going to be putting the effect in supports APNG, save it as that. I'll keep the transparency from PNG, yet have the animation properties of a GIF.

Works and with 10% of the .tif file size, thanks. Smile

Thank you, I'll mess around with that.

those graphics are meant for Add color effects, not for pixel perfect graphics. If you want to manipulate the images so you can make it pixel perfect, just turn up contrast and limit number of colors. Once that is done, you have to zoom in and clean it up.

Hope that helps

More work but would make files smaller, I'll mess around with this too. Thanks. Smile
