My very first sprites were utterly painful. They were microscopic for one, unshaded and lacking all sorts of details. Then the true nightmare happened when I tried tackling bigger sprites.

Some guy off mcleodgaming had this cool sonic fan character, but no sprites for it, so I edited knuckles head and made everything else custom, I had fun making it, felt proud. :] I need to start spriting again, I don't want to be this bad ever again.
