A Freezing Block of Ice

the reason they look so shiny is because you're using white as the brightest shade and using too many colors
in other words, get rid of the white, and it'll help the contrast a ton.

iceman's spriting theory so far:

[x] humoungous amounts of contrast
[x] over AA everything
[x] brown is the universal color and everything can be shaded with brown
[x] highlights on everything
[x] if previous is checked it must be white no matter what happens.

well its iceman thread so we make fun of him.

if you want to make fun of yourself, go make your own sprites, over sprite them and then i'll personally find your jokes funny!

something that size should have less colors - it ends up impacting the clarity of the image, which is kind of important because its small.

it also bugs me that the lightsource on mario and the mushrooms is different from the lightsource on the bricks

or maybe it isn't
idk

Can a moderator or Staff please merge my Somari topic with this please? Thank you.
Anyways, I've been inspired to continue this again (I'm still doing Mario in Sonic 1.) seeing as how alot of people liked it.

Mario is finally Final.

Too bad I don't know anything about Megaman. I'll look up some moves for him, or you guys could suggest attacks.

Oh my

Mega Man is known to use the Rush Jet and Rush Coil which could be an Up B (possibly something akin to Snake's up b or Sonic's up b)
Mega Man flashes colors while charging if you care about that
edit: ope I'm blind nvm
Mega Man slides across the floor

everything else he does is pretty much game specific. He has a ton of special moves, you could incorporate that in a "press b+a direction to change weapons!" or you could just pick specific ones. One of his stranger ones is the ball thing he has in 8 and mvc but I can't see that working well in SSB. One he uses in MVC is the tornado hold, basically a giant pillar of wind. ...That doesn't sound very SSB though does it? A frequent weapon is his shield weapons, particularly his leaf shield from MM2/mvc(again). The first time you press the button, it creates a shield. The second time you press it, it becomes a projectile and shoots forward. He has everything from elemental attacks to explosions so it's kind of hard to choose. And for some reason I can't think of the particularly interesting ones! He's used a flame sword before but I'm not so sure about that one. He has bombs that stick to walls. He has random acrobatic moves. Ah... He's used his friends Auto Eddy and Beat to help him, you could use them in attacks (auto uses a rocket lancher, eddy spits items or bombs out of his head, beat's a bird that can charge forward. Dunno what you could use 'em for but yeah!)

You could incorporate the rush adaptor, where he combines with rush, possibly for a final smash. Other FS options are the screen-filling attacks he has or the time stopping ones (or technically you could have him use the rush adaptor and then use those)

tl;dr rush jet/coil, sliding, a shield weapon, rush adaptor

EDIT: In MVC mega man uses regular punches/kicks so you could use those for attacks

"Do not use?" What do you intend on doing with these sprites. I hoped to see them added to the site when completed.

I think he's planning on making an actual fangame.

First of all: I think the "Do not use" label is completely useless, you're making full spritesheets for commercial characters that are in no way your own property, even if you have plans to use them in your own project (no matter what it is) the fact that there is absolutely no commercial gain in it for you honestly makes me say that there's really no reason to be overprotective.

Due to the number of animations given to Mario (and soon Megaman as well?) these sheets actually seem like they might be fun to work with for someone who's looking for a "complete" mario sprite sheet, combined with the classic 8-bit shading it's also easy to use together with slightly divergent styles.

If I was you I'd really reconsider making it either public domain or at least giving it a "don't use without credit" tag instead.

Either way, onto the actual art; I'll say in advance that I find it pretty hard to actually crit 8-bit stuff due to how simple it is, generally a person has to mess up pretty badly for me to dislike their 8-bit work, and I honestly don't think you did at all.

Stuff I dig:

1. Mario's face is actually pretty darn cute here, I'm not sure if you used a ref/base to make it look the way it does, but the big nose and general proportions really look nice, it's more stylized than the average mario sprite, but in a good way.

2. Nice to have a very full animation sheet for mario, although I might be mistaken due to inexperience (I hardly ever work with commercial sprites) I'd say that this size and the number of animations will make the uses for a spritesheet like this extremely versatile, which is one reason why I really urge you to reconsider making it public.

dislikes:

Not very much to say here, as I mentioned, 8-bit [especially at this scale] is very hit or miss, and if you hit there's little to really fix about it.

I will say that megaman's idle pose has really wide legs, I'm not sure how big of a fan I am of that.

Also: the coin in mario's sheet looks pretty bad the shadow/blob of black pixels really doesn't work well on it.

Hope my post's been of some use to you,
peace out.

Thanks, I will think about it. And fix the coin.

If it's the extended A-down, almost looks like something out of MvDK, but I can't be sure. That or it's the Super Jump from SMB2.

Can't think of any major crits, as the coloring's true to 8-bit standards, and the lineart looks pretty solid. The only thing I think is a bit off is the Mushrooms' eyes; the shading makes the closer, bigger eye look weird, especially on the red one. You might consider trimming down the bigger eye to the size of the other one.
