the lines in the eye could be thicker, the line separating the white part from the red is jagged, and since it's supposed to be metallic, then I suggest you upping some contrast and making good use of reflections.

Ohh, I see what you're talking about with the jaggedness, I'll go back and fix that. As for the shading, is electrode metallic? I always imagined it as kind of a hollow shell similar to an egg's shell, but I'll go back and do that. =]

Do you have any advice on vileplume? I'm kind of lost...

idk, I think you should've sketched every line instead of making parts of it first. By sketching, you can have a better perception of the proportions and stuff

Ahh, I agree, I didn't realize that size was going to be a problem when I was making it at first. I'll go back and redo it and repost both after. Many thanks. =]

Edit - I believe I've fixed the jaggedness of the red part of electrode, and I tried adding more shading to it, but I really couldn't capture a metallic feel. And trying to make the eyes bigger didn't work, either. =\

What do you think of the new shading?

Edit #2 - I tried making magnemite:

The size restriction to only 15 pixels makes it tough, so I'd also like some tips on that.

The magnemite needs more contrast/outlines.

if you took something like the third-from-the-left electrode and moved the shading a bit more towards the center, that'd be good
also the shading and contrast on the upper halves change on all of them, but the bottom halves have the same shading and contrast no matter what; I'd make the bottom half match the top half in terms of amount of hue-shift and contrast

I edited it step by step so I can explain better

1-Original sprite

2-Notice that If I remove all his features, the shading curves are jagged (3, marked in red). If Electrode is a sphere, he should be shaded like one.

4-First, I fixed the jaggies found in the outline. See how it is smoother than before?

5-I simply shaded the ball. Notice that if I shade first, you can make smooth curves. If you add details first, you might get distracted by them and make wobbly curves.

6-Since Electrode seems like it's made of steel, I gave him a metal shading. Shading metal objects is pretty complicated, I suggest looking for references when doing so. Some tips about it is that metal objects have great contrast and suffers ambient shading (that is, it doesn't only get lighter in one side and darker on other; notice that I added a slight highlight in the exact opposite side of the ball).

7-Made the red line.

8-Painted the down side red. Notice that I kept all the shading's shapes; I just painted them accordingly. I also changed the red hues so it looks more interesting.

9-Added the face. The circled parts gain highlights/shading because they protude a little from the face. Raised eyebrows and lips get shading to convey the 3D feel.

10-finished piece
