Character Portrait
#1
Hello i am new to the forums and this is my first sprite that i've made in a very long time.

he is supposed to be some sort of robot character. The style i am aiming for is the portraits here:

http://www.spriters-resource.com/genesis...sheet/5944

I am looking for some help adjusting things which don't look right and explaining things to me because eventually i want to make a lot of these but i am not quite there yet as you can see.

Leave a comment on it and tell what can be fixed and post an image about it or something. Whatever feedback you can give is helpful. Thanks.

It looks too soft to be a robot. On top of that, I'm not quite sure what it's supposed to look like. It's a little unreadable.

unreadable? what do you mean by that?

i know it does look pretty soft, comparing it to the style of the other sprites in the link i posted, it just doesn't match but i don't know how to correct it.

I mean I can't tell what I'm supposed to be looking at.

ok so he's a blue robot, his head is blue and his shoulders are and his jaw is separate, it's red. The nose is a bit bad, the shading under it makes it look like the whole thing is a frog from far away, and idk how to fix it.

then it has one wire in the back exiting then entering the head. then theres another on the front, exiting, but it got cut off or something.

i'm not aiming to make anything familiar, it's just imaginary.

I've gotta say, it really doesn't look like metal. The dithering makes it look like something textured. You should look up some metal pics for an idea on how to shade it. I couldn't really tell that the red bit was part of the face, it looks like a scarf more than the jaw (I'm assuming it's meant to be a humainoid robot).

Also, I think maybe you should read the "spriting dictionary" in case you don't know some terms.

I love this game...! I think that it would take someone who really knows the Mean Bean Machine style to help you out. I really hope you can finish this.

well, i'm not going for a robotic texture, i am trying to match the style of the link i had in the first post.

i am going to have to fix the nose, since i'll be is i changed it a little it wouldn't make the jaw look like a scarf.

then it will hardly look like a robot.

look that the style you're trying to imitate uses harsh highlights (white highlights) to give them enough contrast to be metallic. Metal are usually high in contrast, so try implementing it in your sprite.
