i don't think you read my previous post properly.
i offered different potential meanings, because what it was alluding to was vague and unstated, and then stated that they didn't apply. i never stated that you specifically meant either - i'm not sure how, under those circumstances, you can assume i thought you were "attacking" the souls games (which are objectively better designed: not a matter of preference). i won't push whether or not enemies in zelda do that or not - i don't remember them doing that, and i know for a fact they don't in link to the past, but i haven't played a new zelda game in quite a while aside from playing the demo of skyward sword and watching other people play that.

I can assure you they do in the 3d, I've been playing all of them in a Zelda humping love fury.

To me this says that you think I'm making unfair assumptions on Dark Souls and Demon Souls, and that with Zelda games I don't know what I'm talking about, and it kind of hurts that you'd say I didn't read your post properly when I got from it what I read Sad

With skyrim thats kind of an undeniable yes, the combat is awful: as far as Skyward Sword goes, I would probably say yes as well - from what i've played of the demos it definitely seems good, but it still doesn't have the same level of quality or precision of the Souls titles. I'll have to see if there are additional layers I wasn't able to delve into yet, but I sincerely doubt it'll surpass: the combat in souls is the fundamental basis and tool of the game. It conveys the sense of dread and tension, it is the way in which you interact with the architecture and level design (which is phenomenal), and it, more than anything, is what keeps you engaged. Because the second you lose engagement, you're going to die: wildly swinging or just attacking will serve only to get you killed, and mindlessly wandering through environments will just leave you open to ambush. It is a means of atmosphere just as much as the auditory-visual design is.

i didn't say you were, though. i said it was a possible meaning for what you said, because i wasn't sure what exactly you meant. i didn't mean to imply you didn't know what you were talking about - i did try to leave room in there for a margin of error, or to show that it can happen (by saying it was less applicable to souls than zelda).

Well, no, actually; that was in reference to Skyward Sword. Only the first part prior to the colon was in reference to Skyrim - little needs to be said for the combat in that game. I then stated "as far as Skyward Sword goes" meaning that statements after that were in reference to Skyward Sword and not Skyrim.

Your post also brings up a lot of other things I find amusing relating to the faulty design of Skyrim, or of those kinds of games in general. It also brings up an amusing level of apologetics found most strongly in the games media.

I don't know if Skyward's combat needs to be compared.

Nintendo's always been the one with the simplistic game styles, despite Zelda's purpose was puzzles over combat.
Even bosses, figuring out the weakness was easier than the combat.

I honestly can't say much about Skyrim itself (haven't played it) but huge open world WRPGs have never appealed to me outside of being something to do when there's nothing else more fun to do...

they always seem to sacrifice plot, characterization and gameplay for "HEY GUYS LOOK AT ALL THE USELESS SHIT YOU CAN DO IN THIS GAME THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING!!!"

Of course, I haven't played Skyrim, so my assumptions based on what I have played/seen of the genre could be wildly wrong... but most open-world WRPGs seem to be pretty much the same thing in different visual trappings.

can you have fun with it? absolutely. nobody is saying you're not allowed to have fun with it.

but that suddenly not make it a badly designed game.

the combat is lifeless and empty, the art style and overall designs are generic, the engine is faulty and the developers break shit more than they fix it. doing things is uninteresting, the storyline is drab, and the only actually well-done quality of the game is that it looks nice and there's tons of customization. but those two things don't make a good game.

edit: oh and third person view actually looks "right" and not like your character is skating on the ground (it only took 10 years)

I'd also say it sounds pretty nice. The compositions are nicer than most comparable video game soundtracks (i.e. - ones that try to emphasize Big Orchestras For Extra Epic), and i think we have Jeremy Soule to thank for that. (he's the composer: he also composed for Secret of Evermore, which has a really nice soundtrack.)

I'm curious, does it still look like they are flailing their limbs around and not knowing how to properly use a sword to attempt to attack things in 3rd person mode?

Because that was kinda a minor irk I had with Oblivion that I didn't like tbh.

monster/boss designs are completely uninteresting and don't try to create any sort of vaguely interesting and memorable experience by their design. it's actually a common fault of "WRPG"s in general and not Skyrim's fault itself.

zelda is pretty "medieval" too but they rarely have boring-looking monsters/characters/etc. zelda is the fantasy setting done right.
