I'm sure they would be grouped in some sort of way, but it's not like the creators of Pokemon defined their biology in any detail, so there's really no way of knowing how they would be grouped by real world scientists
edit: why am I even talking about this??

What? No, they are grouped.
Pokemon have these things known as "Types."

Pokemon are grouped into a group known as pokemon(Obviously), they're subgrouped by type.
Pokémon are Pokémon. That's all there is to it as far as I'm concerned.

Meh I get all your points. Guess I'm just thinking too realistic, as usual. It's like trying to say "why do Saiyans look exactly like humans", we could have a whole discussion about it and get to the point where we just accept it as a fact because it's the only way Goku was able to be an alien.

Actually it could theoretically have something to do with the Namekian Planetary Guardians attempting to create world inhabitants in their own images and creating similar but not perfectly alike creatures.
Edit: And also, you aren't thinking "realistically" you're thinking familiar. What is realistic for us of Earth may be outrageous for those of Kanto.
When I said "realistically" I meant in real life, which is obviously here on Earth and not in the Pokemon world (since it doesn't exist). And isn't Kanto a region, not a planet?

That is the whole point. It is terrible, yet there are instances that deaths are mentioned by (mostly) less significant characters. It makes no sense other than to teach morale. Pokedeath is nothing more than a myth to scare children into doing good, like the Boogieman or whatever.
Point is, Pokemon are living figures, like monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh are trading cards (like those pieces of cardboard actually have hearts). Death, along with other data provided by the many sources found throughout the series, are but stories to add character to these figurines, that's it.
All in all, like you said, it's just a kids game with cool monsters.

well, it being a duck that carries a leek, no wonder it was hunted for food.
also while you like discussing this and all, I don't get the point of it myself. I mean, men can't even explain some of the aspects that occur in real life. Why do you think you can explain things in a man-made universe, especially when some of those aspects were ignored or simply winged out? (not counting the fact that this universe was created only to serve as a pretext for a kids' game)
my two cents, tho.
