The lineart is really poorly done, especially on the overalls. Take your time with that because that's pretty much the most vital part of the sprite (in my opinion, at least). Don't use MS Paint default colors. You do know you can make your own colors in MS Paint, right? Just double click a color and it'll bring up a prompt to make your own color. The shading is also pretty inconsistent; the hat, it seems like the light source is coming from the top right, but on the torso it seems to be coming from underneath. I'm assuming you did that because of Mario's head being over it, but I don't believe that Mario's head would cast that much of a shadow. On top of that, the legs and stomach aren't shaded in the same manner as the head is. Honestly, it's not as bad as a lot of first sprites that I see are, but it still needs quite a bit of work.
