Tablet help

The tablet I am using is a Wacom Bamboo tablet. The touch pad thing works and it can move the mouse and stuff. But when I use the pen, the touch pad doesnt even do anything. Any reason why?

I'm not sure if this helps in any way, but I'll type this anyway.
I have a Wacom Intuos, so they're not exactly the same, but I've come to find that (most likely just for me)I have to plug the USB part in before my computer is on if I want it to work.
The pen doesn't respond if I try to connect with my computer already on.

I'm not sure what you mean by "touch pad" (a laptop trackpad, or an actual part of the tablet?), but my pen only responds if it's connected while off.
