Hola! Alrighty. First off, modelling isn't something you can just pick up. It takes a while to learn... With that said, I suggest you start out with Misfit Model 3D. It is the most simple 3D Model viewer out there, and it's got some really powerful editing tools, depending on what you are looking for. http://www.misfitcode.com/misfitmodel3d/

Now, then, as for ripping models, it really depends on what game they are from. Not all games can be ripped from, but some Consoles have easy formats. (Ones they use for MOST games) Like the Nintendo Wii. So it really depends on what you are going to be ripping. As for ripping, I recommend 3DS Max. Most people say it's not free, but the student version is. With the student version you get everything in the normal version. And it's free. I recommend Max over another Modeller that is free called Blender, because with Max there are more lighting options and plugins. The only difference is Blender gets updated frequently, while Max only gets updated once a year. So I would urge you to get both 3DS Max (Student Version) (The best 3DS Max version is 2010) and Blender. Both have exclusive plugins, good points, and bad points. Both are also extremely powerful model editors, more so than Misfit Model 3D. I still recommend you start with Misfit though, because it is the simplest thing out there, and is really easy to get a hold of.

Now, if you like Misfit, and really want to get into modelling, I recommend Max and Blender. Also, with Max and Blender you can do something called "Rendering", which is how game developers make box arts if they are not drawn or Live-action. Anyways, I hope I helped in a small way. If you have any questions feel free to as me! And sorry if I say some things twice. I just woke up, it's before school, and I'm super sleepy.

Why is 3dmax 2010 the best version?

Well, 2010 or 2011. The newest ones are really large in file size, and lag on a fairly good computer. 2010 and 2011 run on lesser computers, and almost all plugins work on 2010. And 2010 is pretty stable. It's just my personal preference. Cute

Yeah I agree the newer ones are much bigger in size, aind i guess the viewports seem to lag more (tough this could be changed in the configuration)

Just as josh98 said it's not something you can just "Pick up" because it takes a lot of time to get used to it and... ITS A TEDIOUS AS HELL PROCESS . But I digress, As far as "how to rip and see 3D models" Well that Vary for ALL GAMES. A lot of games don't always share the same extension (file type). Which will make you jump program to program at times. But I usually use "Blender" for 3D viewing and Visual Studio 2013 Microsoft for de-compiling (taking a part a game) but trust me using Visual Studio is a complicated Thing so stick with 3D ripper max So, all in all. Be ready to Fail... A LOT. But when you discover something it'll definitely be worth it.
