The Nostalgic Pokemon Emerald Hack
#16
Are you hacking emerald or rebuilding it? I'm not sure why but without the Gen 3 pokemon I just wouldn't feel the motivation to play this instead of Emerald itself. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Johto gets a lot of love, and something just wouldn't feel right without the Gen 3 pokemon. If it's nostalgia you're aiming for, I feel like a devamp would work just as well and feel less cheap... You can innovate and still have nostalgia. That's just what I think, though.

I kinda felt the same way, actually.

But then I realized, apart from the map being devamped to its gen 2 appearance, replacing all the Pokemon around Hoenn with gen 2's more or less completely rebalances the wild encounters, the trainer battles, the gym battles, the elite 4 battles

...the entire game. and it still feels nostalgic but...fresh.

I wouldn't mind having access to gen 3 Pokemon postgame though HINT HINT

I just thought something: this could potentially be handled as an interpretation of what happens in-between generations.

depending on how in-depth you want to go, the map could be modified to be part of an archipelago that lies south of the Hoenn region and north of the Kanto and Jotoh regions.

also, random aside: making an edit to Arbok's markings to reflect the change in region would be something fun to include sprite-wise.

I just imagined the Prof. sequence where he's being chased by a Poochyena/Zigzagoon with one of thoes non-descript Pokémon overworld sprites, this is a beautiful thing.

this is a cool idea but the map is murdering me. If you look at the GB/C games you'll notice tiles are in 2x2 groups. A single tree is never by itself.

Which map, specifically? Because I don't see it

Although after further inspection, the tile sets in Gold does have a grouping of small tree and blank blank grass, so I can assume it's been used somewhere
