TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|SWITCH HYPE TRAIN NOW BOARDING
Maybe it could happen if they used the FF1 Black Mage with a vivi alt, but Vivi's design was intended to look like the classic black mage anyway, so who knows?

Nobody was comparing these franchises to Super Mario, and you're mingling points. Captain Falcon was never part of the popularity contest, you chose to pick on Star Fox, Metroid, and Donkey Kong. Nobody ever even said that these franchises should have as much representation as Mario. Your argument was that they got no new representation because they were unpopular, which is a patently false statement.

"I didn't know about them when I was a kid, therefore they were not popular and are definitely still not popular today."

(04-19-2015, 12:07 PM)recme Wrote: yeah! because i sure do remember earthbound doing so well in the US and getting a sequel in the US!

oh, wait... :\

also, super mario kart sold waayyyyyy better than f-zero. a serious 9:1 ratio over here. the only thing i can say is that smash bros sure did popularize series that weren't well known...

Yeah! Because you were even born yet!

Oh, wait... :\

I also never mentioned Earthbound's sales, I mentioned its reputation, which was on fire even at the time. It's a niche title to begin with, so of course it didn't move millions of units... but it scored well and has always been highly sought after by JRPG fans.

The fact that Mother 3 was never released in English has absolutely zero to do with the fact that it was in development for ten years (five by the time of Smash 64) and had just been shown off in both Nintendo Power (IN AMERICA!!!!) and Nintendo Space World. Actually, I don't know where this "sales and release in America" qualifier came from, America is only a part of Nintendo's market. "It didn't do well in America, therefore it doesn't have recognition anywhere else in the world, like Japan, where all of Nintendo's creators live."

Super Mario Kart sold more than F-Zero... because that totally negates the position it's held in the racing scene since 1990.

Mew2King and ZeRo are doing doubles at the tournament MVG Sandstorm. Guess what their team name is? "Don't Hate Us Because We're Autistic"

Neither of the two wanted or chose that name. The TO's of Sandstorm chose it and are using it because they find it funny.

ok, well if i am misinformed here, then can i at least get an explanation of why there isnt much rep for a certain series. if popularity isnt the case, then it must be something else.

boohoo, i didnt know it was required to be born at that time to know statistics. my bad.

ark kurvis mentioned that ness was in ssb64 all because of iwata. nothing more. unless there are more reasons that i dont know of, which is probably the case.

You can't go sarcastically using "Oh, I remember" for a time period during which you didn't even exist.

Also, I've already given you reasons for why those franchises haven't had any new representation. You chose to ignore them. Some franchises just don't have a lot to draw from (Metroid) or would be redundant (Star Fox, just look at Brawl). In the case of Donkey Kong, it's because his only notable game prior to SSB4's development was DKCR, which focused exclusively on Diddy and Donkey. SSB4 roster was decided before Tropical Freeze existed.

None of that means the franchises are unpopular.

But I've said all of that before. You just keep ignoring it.

I've also mentioned repeatedly quite a few reasons why Ness was relevant at the time of Smash 64. Iwata being instrumental to both games is just another solid point in the character's favor.

Really, start reading more carefully and stop moving goal posts.

That's what recorded history is for. I:

Look, you're evidently taking every comment against Mother and F-Zero as a personal attack today, but neither series has ever really exploded with popularity the way other Nintendo franchises have. If they really had, more people would have recognized who Captain Falcon and Ness were BEFORE Smash Bros, and even after, both series have somewhat reached a point of stagnation until they are brought back more officially (in Mother's case, maybe some sort of localization of Mother 3 officially at all).

You also keep coming back to the Mother 3 Disk Drive prototype as a reason for Mother being relevant at the time, and yes, that's entirely true. What is also true is that the game was seemingly trapped in years of development hell and eventually released on a handheld console a generation after the console the original was being developed for. The mark of a game that a company would consider popular would be pulling the necessary time and resources to make it happen faster and happen right, not keep it in development for ten years and release it in one country.

Do I think F-Zero and Mother don't have fans? No, I love them. Do Nintendo hate these franchises? No, they keep showing they support them, even if they aren't on the front lines. Lucas came back to Smash after being cut, both games have a lot of trophies in Smash, F-Zero was experimented with in Nintendo Land and has inspired two tracks in Mario Kart.

Does that mean they are going to boom with content in Smash? No. They might not. That depends on how popular they really are, which I don' think we as individuals can accurately tally on our own, so it is kind of a moot point.

I dunno what any of you guys are talking about anymore.

Sometimes I wonder what Smash 4 would be like if the series had hitstun again

the whole thing was sarcasm really. although i didnt exist, earthbound was still a flunk here in the states. i didnt have to be born at that time to know that. information was here on the internet, so thats how i learned about the bad sales of earthbound in the us. honestly, i dont see how a jab at my age was needed.

i appreciate the info, but im sorta getting this hostile vibe from your posts. i know now that i was incorrect, but it really seems like you're pushing it...

This gif makes me think of FFAs I've had recently where someone would get bounced around a lot from hard hits, and then I'd sneak in and steal a kill from someone else by B-Airing with Bowser. One time someone did a fully charged Dedede hit and I kicked the guy as he flew by, and he flew SO fast.

What the shit? Stop using people's age in a negative light as a way of trying to prove yourself right. Did you ever stop and think that maybe that might be hurtful? I didn't think so. How many times has this happened to recme now? He's just any other member. People on this forum really need to stop singling out people just because they're younger. Have some tact.

Chill the hell out. I swear to God this is one reason why I stay out of Smash threads but I feel the need to step in here because that is pretty out of line.

Holy shit you guys.

RecMe's initial post:

"Star Fox
Metroid
Donkey Kong are unpopular

F-Zero and Earthbound being represented in Smash 64 was out of left field."

My point is that those three first franchises are not unpopular, and Falcon and Ness were not left field additions when you bother to look at what Nintendo was developing at the time.

"Earthbound 64 development hell"

Mother 3 was actually nearing completion on the SNES before being moved to the N64. Development Hell is irrelevent to Ness appearing in Smash Bros. in 1999 when Nintendo was still planning to release the game.

Also, you want to know why I'm being hostile?

Quote:the whole thing was sarcasm really.

Because of this. Because instead of actually looking at what I've had to say, all you could do to come back at me was be a smug little fuck.

Also, since nobody can fucking read.

Quote:Earthbound failed commercially here in the states.

Edit: I don't even care if F-Zero or Earthbound get anymore representation in Smash Bros. You people need to understand that there were two discussions opened in RecMe's initial response. F-Zero and Earthbound discussion is about fucking Smash 64, not SSB4 or 5 or 6. If that isn't the discussion he intended to open, he should have been more clear.

I did think about it being possibly hurtful, and I went ahead and did it anyway. I am not going to continue being respectful to people who have no better way to respond than with sarcasm.

Also, he made his own age relevant with the whole "I remember" in reference to an event literally years before his birth. No, "statistically it didn't sell well in the US", fine, but wise-ass bullshit, no.

Y-yeesh. Sorry I started all this. I never want people to personally attack each other no matter what their opinions are. My argument was originally (though vaguely) DK VS Fire Emblem. Did DK deserve more content than it got? Does Fire Emblem deserve all the content and attention its getting?

Don't get me wrong. I always believed Fire Emblem deserved a newcomer from Awakening in this game.
