To be perfectly honest, every system nowadays is region-locked. It's not just Nintendo.

PS4 definitely isn't region locked, and I don't think the Xbone is either but I'm not sure on that one.
And then of course there's PC if that counts.

Oh really? I didn't know that. Then again, I don't have a PS4 or XO.

I could've sworn I read somewhere that the 3DS wasn't region locked.
But in retrospect, that doesn't make any sense, since all Nintendo systems thus far have been locked.

To this day, I still use a Freeloader disk to play Japanese games on my European Wii. Good times. Big Grin

Nintendo's -handhelds- haven't been locked previously. The 3DS is the first one to include locks as well as consoles.

I never understood region locking. It only sorta kinda makes sense on consoles where the differences between PAL and NTSC might make it understandable, but in this day and age when most people have TVs that support both, that too isn't really an issue anymore.

It's great that a lot of systems are ditching it, but it isn't completely gone yet, and I really wish that would change in the near future.

Region locking exists purely as a way for companies to get more money from people.

tl;dr explanation: game is ten bucks cheaper in europe than america for whatever reason. why buy the american version when you can get the euro version for cheap? companies dont like that and want money, therefore america is forced to buy the america version unless they buy a euro system first. (replace "america" and "europe" with any region where necessary)

they also use explanations like "it helps us gauge statistics of what regions buy what products" but that's just PR bullshit mostly
it's all about money and is pretty anti-consumer

Well not entirely, it also has to do with censorship. Some games are banned in certain countries, and some have to go under heavier censor editing before they can be released in certain regions. Region locking is a way of making sure people aren't getting their hands on versions that are considered offensive in their area.

I don't see why that should be a limiting factor. If someone's trying to import a foreign game, they must've done enough research on it to know it's something they'd like. I mean, you wouldn't just import some random foreign game for the hell of it; all of that effort and money would be for something you'd really want.

Because for example, before Germany got the South Park game, they had to remove all of the Swastikas from the game because in Germany they're completely banned from being displayed there, so obviously they don't want people to get copies of the game with them in it(I personally think they took it a little to far with that, South Park was obviously using it as an insult to Nazi's but whatever) but that's just one example of.

Wait, what the hell? Why? Why are they doing this?

Goddamn, Nintendo. Even when I start to warm up to it just a little bit because at least the hardware improvements are good and its design is nicer as well, you pull shit like this and I have no choice but to back out even more.

I'm sorry, but there's no reason they'd have to do this. If there is, it's probably something that could have been fixed without breaking goddamn compatibility

My question: Why did they even make the Circle Pad Pro if they never use it?

They did it to get people to shut up. I'm glad I never bought it now.
