Automaton Girl Animatiom

I told my friend that I'd make her into an automaton based on the band Steam Powered Giraffe. This is the result, I want it to be perfect, but this is the best I could do. I could really use some help here.

I've followed up with some crude animations of other people including myself

I know they're supposed to look steampunkish, but I think the random gear sticking out of them looks kinda slapped on. They don't seem to serve any purpose, and look more like they'd get in the way.

It is. It looks like the same gear stock art was slapped onto each sprite.

The first two animations don't have movement where it seems like there should -- when the girl shakes her hip, her upper body remains completely still, and when they guy moves his head there isn't any movement for the neck. I can get that it's an Atomaton, but it just looks.....odd.
