Shemp.....A work in progress.

For my newest spite attempt I thought it would be interesting to post my progress as it develops. As I consider myself a novice at rendering sprites I feel that this is a good way to show my approach and thought process and as always, any pointers, tips, critiques are always welcome. Please note that if I have violated any forum rules I sincerely apologize as I am new to this also.

That being said, my latest attempt was inspired by watching classic Three Stooges comedies and I realized that Shemp has, to my knowledge, never been represented in any Stooges games. The classic line up of Moe, Larry, and Curly are the representatives. I thought it could be fun to have a Three Stooges game with a selectable "third stooge" to represent each era. I used screen grabs of my own game play and ripped the images from them to help me proportion my rendering to size. I use several images for reference (the one for side view is attached to this post), mostly to render Shemp's head and to see his whole body in proportion to Moe and Larry. I noticed that Shemp is taller and thinner so I began by making his head two pixels higher than the others and rendered his head using my reference as my guide and adjusting to fit the sprite style. I have just started rendering his body, as seen in the attachment, here for all to see. Again any pointers, tips, critiques are always welcome.

Just added my latest progress!

I was hoping to extend this farther but the creative bug bit me and I finished it out. This is not quite step by step but from left to right you can see where I went from the "blocked off" body outline from the first post. I started with defining the wrinkles and creases in the overalls, adding different hues and values and detailing the shoes. I applied the same method to the shirt sleeve and finished with highlighting the hand and touching up some areas. In the right hand image we have the two sets of Three Stooges.

These have way too many colors, and are really blurry and hard to read. Cut down the palette and sharpen them up a little. Also, your selout looks more like they were shrunk and then had the background removed with a fill tool.

As for the name, Shemp? You mean Shep, right? Shemp is a witch doctor from Spyro.

Actually, while Dr. Shemp is a character from the Spyro games, the Shemp he's thinking of is one of the Three Stooges. The fact that the boss shares the same name with the comedian is probably a reference.

it's ok to suck, sucking is not bad, just try and aim to always do your best!

Thank you for the feed back! I did remove the background image but I did not alter the scale or palette. I have posted my screen shot that I lifted Moe, Larry, and Curly from. Perhaps enlarging the images may help me in cleaning up the areas you mentioned. Thanks again!

You are correct! Samuel (Shemp) Howard is the eldest brother of Moses (Moe) Howard and Jerome (Curly) Howard, he got his stage name Shemp from Moe and Curly because that is how their mother pronounced his name due to her thick accent
