SpaceShooter

So I am working on a space shooter with a buddy of mine, I am doing the graphics, while he does the coding.
Problem is, I've never really worked on a space theme style ever, so I may need some critique.

Here is just a generic space background I made, I will expand up on it by adding more so the screen can scroll and display new objects in the background. Here's also a font and a border I made, not a whole lot here really.

And here are the ships, the ships on the left are the playable ships, on the right are some enemy ships, and asteroids.
And at the bottom of the playable ships are just two small tests, a Galaga ship, and an Arwing.

And here's just a sample animation.

Thanks, right now I am having a serious problem with animation the ship(s). They are meant to tilt depending on the direction the player moves. so if the player moves right, the ship will tilt right. I've never been much of an animator, so this may come to be a problem later on.

Simple mock up of what it could all be

It is nice so far.

But I wonder if you could give the asteroids more depth. They sort of look flat, more like cookies.

Another thing I'd consider is there isn't necessarily a lot of light in space, so in real life spaceships wouldn't be so bright looking instead they'd look kind of dark and the lights/fire/engine glow would be more exaggerated. But whether this matters is highly up to you, games don't have to stick to 100% physics perfection (98% of games don't).

Hmm gotcha, alright the only reason I made the ships so bight was because I wanted to show some sort of detail. I will work on the asteroids and ships later today

go for the art style you have right now, except the asteroids. the bright ships look good in game design point of view: readable and contrasts well with the background. otherwise the bright shots and rocket boosts would bring more attention than the ship itself.

do a rock texturing with even shading, so you don't need to animate it frame-frame: you can tell the programmer to apply a simple rotation animation, saving you lots of work and still being good gamedev wise.

I agree with Gors in that you are probably okay with the ships as is. It is just something to think about.

It depends what style you are going for in the game.

I have to agree with Gors and Sliversea. The ships are okay, but the asteroids need work.
