Windows 8 brought some really nice significant changes. The UI is much nicer than their Aero (which was really ugly in my opinion). The focus on touch over mouse was what I knew people were annoyed with - for example I had to occasionally use my mother laptop and I didn't know how to do anything cause it was all "Four finger swipe from the right". Once they placed back in the Start Menu elements again I was fine.

My biggest problem with Windows 8 is how everything is an app, and I get booted out of the desktop view whenever I need to search for a program or play with my password.

Completely agree, they took a direction to adapt the OS for other devices and it started to alienate the desktop user.

I've been using the Windows 10 betas ever since they started the preview program and Win10 is fixing a LOT of the issues that the change to 8 introduced. They didn't revert entirely back to 7, but they're trying really hard to give it a similar usability feel while still maintaining the new tablet features and they're keeping the two interfaces generally segregated now. The Start menu is back but you can also pin tiles to it and use it either as a popup menu or as a full screen with the press of a button, and they even brought back stuff like Aero blur to make the desktop look nicer.
It does still have its share of issues (Cortana forcing web searches and internet results generally loading before local results and web results not being able to be turned off) and they STILL haven't fixed the freaking "window titlebar text doesn't turn a light color if your background is dark" thing TWO OS REVISIONS LATER but overall it's pretty nice. If you dislike 8 you should definitely give 10 a shot.

I think I'll wait until beta testing is over. Since they give it free on initial release to windows 8 and 7 users, I'll wait until then.
