ARE YOU GUYS KIDDING ME LIKE I WAS MAKING FUN OF THIS BEFORE BUT AFTER I SAW THE TRAILER I WAS LIKE HOOOOOOOOOOOOLY FUCK I WANT THIS GAME INSIDE OF ME. IF THEY SAID "THANK YOU FOR WAITING, THIS GAME IS COMING OUT TOMORROW" i would have actually SHIT MY PANTS THAT VERY SECOND
no seriously. call me a dumb baby but while I too am a little bummed that the game isn't running ATB as a throwback to the 90's, this system honestly looks A LOT more fun to play.
Looking at the trailer for the FF7 remake it's a mix of AXB (active cross battle) from FFXV with Kingdom Hearts mixed in (seems more like the other way around - KH, of FFXV
If you're curious what AXB is, skip to around 5m30s:
It's kind of Kingdom Hearts-ish already. In the FFXV demo above admittedly AXB looks kinda slow, so to see a mix of that and one of their most popular battle systems to keep the gameplay upbeat and fast-paced is great. I don't know how well a character like Barrett or Yuffie is going to translate into this new battle system without being boring (stay back, just dodge a lot and spam semi-automatic gun arm or ninja stars) but I'm already looking forward to boxing the shit out of people as Tifa. Which is like, c'mon
They're gonna let you box the shit out of people with Tifa
If they put "Box the shit out of people with Tifa" on the box, it's an instabuy. Even if they force you to stick with Cloud, he looks like he's got a decent enough flowing combo system to keep things flowing.
But I'm with most of you guys - I was too excited during the trailer to notice that Cloud has a little noodly arms. Keep in mind though that this is an EARLY demo, so they might beef him up sometime between now and whenever-they-feel-like-releasing-this-game.
But really, dead honest - this game looks fucking hot and I want it. I really hope KH3 flows this nicely. I think I'm the intended audience though - Westerners who were kinda put off the original and would be more interested in a game that literally anyone could pick up. The ATB battle system of the past is honestly offputting to a significant chunk of today's gaming audience (really, it appeals to classic gamers, and that's nice and all but it's also a bit alienating to newer ones who enjoy today's dynamic storytelling and fast-paced action titles) so it makes sense that they're basically taking one of their most popular battle systems and revamping it so that a larger audience will be able to enjoy it.
Like c'mon. Now your friend who loves Destiny, hates Mario but thought Bayonetta was alright now has a gateway game into JRPGs.

This part is the only part I disagree with, lol. And it's because it most likely won't get them into JRPGs anymore than they were before, since it doesn't play like your average JRPG, which are usually Turn-based or ATB. If anything, it'd be their gateway to games like Kingdom Hearts or Dynasty Warriors.
Oh and I couldn't say Real Time Combat/AXB is more fun than ATB. Both have their draws and excels, but both also have their problems. The former often boils down to a button mashing fest when the game is way too easy, and less strategizing because of it. The latter can lead to longer, drawn out battles or become less engaging when you're forced to grind for however long (i.e., just walk around and hold A while you read a comic book).

I stand corrected by the way, because it says "Remake" right in the title.
I reaaaally like the look of that battle system though, the game looks pretty awesome.

My biggest complaint against what you've said, Kosheh, is just that one type of game has replaced the other almost entirely in the marketplace. The dynamic storytelling, easy-play action games where you can run around while dialogue is going on don't appeal to me a whole hell of a lot, so I've kind of slunk into my retro cave (and indies) for the past decade or so. Here was a game which could have been an awesome visual orgasm fest with gameplay that appeals to me, but they go with something else. The something else that has to be really damn special for me to appreciate it.
So from my perspective the market has been alienating for a little while and they presented something that might be more familiar only to take that and make it alienating as well. While I feel for the people who once were alienated in the past, by replacing one type of game with the other, they're just alienating the market that used to exist.
As I and the dev team have already said this game had zero to no chance of being a, scene for scene, bit for bit, mechanic for mechanic. That particular version of Final Fantasy will never get made on a proper budget it's going to be remade somewhere for Augmented or Virtual Reality, for free by someone. That game cannot be commercially done in a timely manner, if you disagree with me you have just displayed zero concept of making a game, in terms of your ability to look at size scale and remember that this is a modern detailed Midgar being built here. All of those pre-rendered scenes would cost fortunes to recreate again in higher resolution. Because that'd take an absurd amount of people all working on different parts of backdrop and scenery for cohesiveness would be a drain on the budget alone.
Now that that's out of the way. Let's take a closer look at this game play. I see Cloud Attacking with GUI similar to what we all know and love about Final fantasy Attack, Magic, Item , Defend? We focus on Cloud attacking Shinra guards I don't see any strange movement like when Noc attacks (there's sway in direction of where you're holding direction as you attack to indicate to you where Noc is aiming even when locked on) or how like when Sora attacks (same thing but to a more extreme degree than Noc since he was technically doing it first and his style is cartoony and the animation is suppose to be more embellished.) so I'm guessing the only input here has been X everyone's assuming these are multi button pushes but someones using one of the direction inputs to control the attack menu. So either the dynamics of battle have changed or they're just using different techniques to produce the same effects. now I'm not saying this is ATB but a pseudo cross breed. I dunno, maybe I'm over analyzing it?

My friend told me a rumor that slight PS2 compatibility is coming to Ps4. No idea what that entails, I can't actually look now.
No ps3 compatibility of course. Which sucks because mine is broken.

I can confirm it, because this weekend they re-released 4 PS2 games on PSN, with 1080p upscaling and trophy support:
- Dark Cloud - $14.99
- Grand Theft Auto III - $14.99
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - $14.99
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - $14.99
- Rogue Galaxy - $14.99
- The Mark of Kri - $14.99
- Twisted Metal: Black - $9.99
- War of the Monsters - $9.99
but as you might've noticed, something here is really stupid
like I own over 110 fucking playstation 2 games and I can't just pop a single one into my PS4
oh well, good thing i still got my playstation 2. and 3. literally in the same fricken place

One thing that always confused me about the hardware was how the PS3 could play PS1 games, but not PS2 games. How does a system work with 2 generations older hardware, but not just the prior generation?
It's things like that where I wouldn't be surprised if they bundled the original FF7 game with, upscaled gaphics, on a working PS4 disc for some box set or something, just so they can actually play it on the same hardware.

because emulation is actually really taxing on processing power.
Basically, the system is strong enough to outdo the prior system, but it cannot faithfully imitate it. When you emulate something, it means you're imposing not only the capabilities, but also the limitations of the older system. It's a 'workaround' to make system A work on B - and this is actually difficult to process.
The Super Gameboy add-on for the SNES is actually fitted with the original Gameboy's hardware, because despite the SNES being a 16-bit console, it didn't have enough power to emulate a different console.
Nintendo manages to keep retrocompatibility on their hardwares because they actually leave a portion of the old system's hardware inside.
Basically, think about why there's no emulators for PS4 yet, despite some computer specs being thousands of times better. It's because of this reason, teamed with many others (such as cracking the system, development etc.)
A workaround would be to fully reprogram the game on the new hardware instead of attempting to emulate it - this way, you can use the processing power to its fullest extent instead of giving a chunk of it to emulation.

Wait, can we really not use our PS2 discs?

nope ):
Maybe someday, but like
not yet
which bugs the everloving hell out of me; at least the PS3 allowed you to pop your PS1 discs in and play them upscaled. The PS4...just plays PS4 games. >_>

You're right. After some digging, it seems that they have no plans to make PS2 discs readable. Not only that, they don't even plan to rerelease that many more PS2 games. What a pointless endeavor. Gonna go hook my PS2 back up. Here I thought I was going to get an open space on my shelf so that I could finally move my retron 5 off of the coffee table.

Can all versions of the PS3 play PSone discs, or is it just that first version with the PS2 disc-support?

To my knowledge all ps3 can play Ps1 discs, as my ps3 had no ps2 but I could play ps1. I don't think ps4 plays ps1 discs, though, which disappoints me.
