Sound Ripping Tutorial
#1
Anybody know of the best way to rip and/or exactafy sound effects from certain gaming systems like SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS and Mobile (as in Android/OSi)?

That's a really broad range of systems you're asking for there. Mobile in particular varies from game to game, depending on developer preference.

Most of the rest of those use sound banks, with some exceptions. I can say with certainty that I have yet to load up a NDS game that Tinke can't find the sound bank for, so that one can cover you for that system.

As for the others... GBA I recall a program that would "capture" sounds as they were playing, though you had to be right on the money with triggering the sound, or it would only capture part of it or not at all. I don't remember the name of it as I lost it many system crashes ago, but there is probably something better out there by now.

So Tinke will cover the NDS sound effect rippings?

How does that work? Any step-by-step tutorials involved?

There really isn't much to it. When you open up your ROM, look for an .sdat file like I have highlighted here. That's your sound bank. Once you click view, the program will soft decompress it for you so you can see what's inside. From there it's just a matter of navigating the files within and listening to the ones that Tinke can read to find what you need to rip.

Word of caution though, the sound bank can have instrument notes for the BGM within it as well, especially for older games. Just remember that these aren't allowed on TSoR.
