Would side-scrolling count as a genre? There are many games that can fall under that category.

Then again, I'm not entirely sure what counts as a genre and what would better fit as a tag. :/

Side-scroller would be more of a tag. It's a generic term and all of them will fit into one of the more specific existing genres.
