how to sprite small eyes

Anyone have any advice/ help on spriting eyes, on human characters,

when working with small sprites, ie. 8-bit or 16-bit era

Here's a few attempts.

My problem is you can barely see them..

This ones a little better but I still don't think the eyes are great.... they look pretty basic


If anyone has any advice or just better examples feel free to throw them in.

If you don't mind me making an edit, I think adding a brow might help to make the eyes stand out more.



Also, a couple of other observations I had:
The dithering on the pants seems a bit too extreme - it makes them look like the texture of wood. Also, the shading on the hair and shirt is not very noticable from afar. Adding more contrast, removing the dithering and using hue shift might help create a better pallette.

Made the eyes a pixel bigger and removed the nose from Koala version, who need a nose anyway

I got to agree with Daemoth's attempt. The eyebrows from Koala and the additional pixel helps you notice the eyes more. Though maybe add a pixel to represent the nose. I think it would look better and more noticeable with a nose.

Alright, I decided to sprite something using your skills on how to make small eyes, and it was the final piece to my masterpiece
I've finally done it. I've hung this up on my wall and have quit spriting. Thank you.

Oh damn it. I just realized this is not a tutorial on how to make small eyes.
He meant "how to make small eyes" in the literal sense. wow. I'm a real idiot. Sorry about that.

I still dont like any of the eyes because the brows look too big or the eyes are too LONG and not wide enough

So I guess I'm looking for bigger, wider eyes, sort of Like in Sonic but not that big , somewhere in between what we have here, and Sonic 3 size.

If you're looking for something specific maybe you should try editing it yourself and making several variations until you find what you want?
