Odds are if you're home, it's kill or be killed, anyways

if someone arrives with the intent of stealing stuff, or even harming you or a family member, and you're home, you're screwed unless you can either scare them off, or disable them. and if you can disable them, you may as well take them out

something like that happened recently:
an 18 year old girl was trapped in her closet when two drug addicts entered her house. she was texting her mom to call the police and she responded that they were on their way. then the two crooks entered her room and they got the shit scared out of them when the girl jumped out of her closet shouting for them to leave. she took a big risk, because these crooks would have tried to hurt her if they knew she was in the house. luckily her plan worked

lol!
That'd actually be pretty awesome and totally destructive if they were real. I wonder if insurance covers that?

But if they are just after your stuff? No. No and no. A lot of burglaries are by addicts who just want the next hit and they need the cash. Even they don't want a break-in to go wrong. I mean if they kill you not only are they more likely to get caught but the punishment they'd get would also massively increase. I'm not saying these people are nice people. But most aren't completely insane and killing a load of people.

odds are they won't get punished, rarely do
even if they are caught, slap on the wrist, that's our justice system. there are murderers who have gotten away with what they've done before. simple fact is, unless you're one of the people who has to worry about being accused as a terrorist, then there's no reason to actually fear the law. Drug addicts also have a tendency to think in any way but a rational one. If they're desperate enough to break and enter, they're desperate enough to kill. Besides the things drugs do to people... At that point, given the chance, you should stop them somehow. Realistically, the cops aren't going to arrive in time whether you call them or not. Besides, the sirens will alert any crook to run-off before they're caught. admittedly, I wouldn't necessarily go for a kill unless it was completely necessary, but at the same time, I ain't holding back for someone who thought it was ok to break-into anther's home for the sake of a quick buck. My one and only priority if I can't flee the situation or call for help or hide will be to take them down. I have no reason to concern myself what damage they sustain from that, because they were in the wrong to break-in, and I was simply defending myself, my family, or my stuff. My only priority will be to stop them.

you're right that they may be desperate enough to kill, which is exactly why you should not engage
you're better off letting them steal your junk than risking a violent confrontation that could get you seriously injured or worse, expelled. Every Navy Seal knows this

Murderers who get caught may even end up getting shot, injected with deadly chemicals, or sent to the gas chamber depending on certain factors. Of course some countries are ridiculously soft on these kinds of people. Thanked by: miyabi95_

i don't play or follow GTA...
most people don't live in the immediate vicinity of a police station... in the amount of time to make the call, the crook either will be on their way with something they stole, or they'll find you (and you'll likely be dead, unless you can subdue them, first). the chances a common crook will be caught are slim to none, at best. and not all murderers get caught, either. In addition to this, some states have gotten rid of the death penalty, and our beloved constitution grants people the right to waste time, taxpayer dollars, and prison cell space for filing appeals. It's already been pointed out the system here in America is an absolute joke. The people who are a real problem have no reason to fear their punishment. The small time offenders magically come-out of jail or whatever as hardened criminals. I have no faith in it. IDK where I said to just engage the invader. But odds are, if you're already home, this is your only real option. Crooks know all the hiding spots for your shit, and they sure as hell will find your hiding spot for yourself. Regardless, I'll be damned if I stand-back and let someone attack me , a family member, or friend. Given the opportunity, I will slaughter any low-life pig who would attempt that. Depending on the circumstances, I might actually put my life on the line altogether, if it meant saving someone close to me. Speaking of how the real world works, I don't need reminded. I wouldn't have developed this viewpoint if I didn't know how stuff really goes on. I've watched a ton of crime dramas, and ofc, they always get their man in these shows. IRL, they don't. Some cases go unsolved, some are only solved because of a single piece of evidence, some aren't solved in the time they need to be. People are framed, people are forced to do things they do not want. Justice isn't ever served in a lot of cases. A younger, more naive me would've believed that the good guys always win, that the authorities are 100% reliable, and in some cases, that they can even be trusted. I've since learned how wrong that truly is. I'd like clarification on how I'm apparently relating this kind of scenario to a game I never play, and quite frankly, don't give a damn about, though.
99% of the time if they bump into you while breaking in they flee. Not turn into psychopaths and start killing you.
The chances of them getting caught aren't great, at all. And the chances of getting your stuff back are slim as slim can be. But honestly, they are people. Not good people. But not crazed killers either. Why would most even wait until the place was empty (which is when most burglaries happen) if they were all gun happy killers? You're view on the world and this situation is utterly fictional. Like it's so removed from reality it's actually worrying. (If it means anything I have been broken into while others were upstairs [student accom] a friend was broken into while sleeping [and pretended to be asleep] and another returned home while someone was in their house). I mean, would you really risk your life, and take someone's life, to kill another person, for the sake of your laptop? Because that's messed up. I figured this would be a laff-and-a-half thread with a couple of punchlines, but then

It's pretty clear you have no idea about crime statistics, no idea what drugs actually do, you have incredibly sheltered ideas about the justice system, taxes, and the moral relativity presented by the death penalty, and you don't even seem to realize that killing someone, even in self defense, is manslaughter. Quite frankly if you knew what was actually going on outside of what you're inaccurately calling the "real world", the idea that criminals don't need to worry about the law is a total joke, it's painfully evident that everyone should be worried about the law, even model citizens who go to bed early, brush their teeth, and don't do murders.
