What is the best way to make model icons?

I recently ripped most of the models from Super Mario Galaxy 2 and am ready to upload a few of them and was wondering what is the best way to make the icons for the models? Is the name and border automatically generated? Does it need to have a transparent background? Anything helps. Thanks!

The names/boarders are part of the site code, so making icons is pretty simple~ Small icons are 148x125 and large icons are 750x650. Both need transparent backgrounds.
