DioShiba's Pixel Thread 2021: Assortment of Assets and Artworks
#16
Only two things: The first being something of a process related gif I said I was going to make, and thus, did.
The other being a new thing that I'm doing for the new pixel joint competition, might post my WIP there as well to see what other insight I could get to improve it though, I would say it's also a bit of a longshot.

Will be posting stuff on the discord as well.

Update on the comp piece, more updates to come and critique is always welcome.

(Especially seeing that I need to fix the green Saturn like planet, yikes.)

Looks good so far, great color palette!

So there is a slight change in the initial plan that I had for this.

Originally I was going to make the foreground like a somewhat medieval prison but for the aesthetic I'm shooting for I don't think it's going to work too well.

So I made the switch from that into something that's a little more sci-fi given the nature of the BG.
The fore ground is going to be a little more or less inspired by super metroid while the BG or what you're seeing out of the window still has this weird other-worldly feeling so hopefully with the way I'm playing around with the composition it'll pay off. The only thing that irks me about this one at the moment are the bars splitting up the window, but I think that can be remedied somehow.

Plus with some technical know how I can probably get way more detail out of this without having to do everything manually, but we'll see how the piece wants to end up breathing so to say. Which is why you see the textured thing in the foreground that looks rather unfinished. IN a sense that bit I'm going to treat that a bit more like a tileset as I'm building up the details in the foreground.

The one thing I'm beginning to realize with the Saturn planet is that the shading I have for it now probably won't work unless I dive back into it and do some fancy ass dithering to it, and the ring is kind of off still, but I think we're getting there with it.

The small planets will be easier to put up with however so that's a plus.

And here we go, the final piece.

I ended up cutting out a lot of unnecessary detail but yeah, I think I did good.

EDIT: Whoops, over looked something. Did a slight tweak to it.

Looking good.
The sun's reflection off of the water looks amazing!

I agree with Retro, the way the sun reflects of the water is fantastic, and honestly the best thing about the piece, especially considering water is so hard to nail. I think with the rest though the textures feel a bit... off? The colour choice is fantastic and i think with a bit more study into how the textures of rock and grass etc should be portrayed, you can take your work a lot further. Obviously over-texturing can also be bad but i think a little more will put you at the sweet spot.

Basically, i think your level of texturing for the water is perfect, but for everything else(the trees, rock and grass), it could be bumped up just a little to match.

Also, your sky works really well as do your planets, i just think they feel a bit too separate right now, as though the planets are small and floating as opposed to large and celestial. I can't give exact advice but i think this could be improved through the use of having them have a bit of reflective light(like, the moon) and possibly a bit of shading in relation to the sun. It would be something i would have to try before commenting on with more certainty but that is what i would try first Smile

I guess essentially what I'm saying is overall, you have several solid pieces, but they need to be bought more "together", in my opinion.

I had a feeling there were things that I wasn't considering. Thank you for the honest critique.

I wasn't planning on going back into this because of the other work I'm swamped with in my classes for Illustration and Animation in particular, since right now most of that stuff has priority for me (I know it's not the best excuse, the problem is I have my Senior Capstone to worry about for animation.) but I think this gives me the right motivation to try to get back into this in my spare time when I get the chance to. Will definitely post it here when the time comes.

I appreciate being busy and if you lack the time or motivation to go back to this piece, or even just feel you've taken it as far as you can, there's never anything wrong with leaving a piece to move onto a new piece you have the energy or motivation for. The important part is not making the perfect piece, but learning what you can from it.

If you do go back though, i look forward to seeing it, or if you move on i look forward to seeing your next piece!

So I have come with something I've been slowly working on:

Obviously not finished, but I'm wondering what's a better way to approach the lighting and what other fixes should I consider? Basing this off an illustration I did for a class I had this past semester.

Reminds me of one I worked on as well some years back, also Metroid-related.
