I've not attempted to do small sprites for a few years now, but I decided to give it a go again with my more refined art style and a somewhat better knowledge of what makes sprites look good.
I've got a heck of a lot of work ahead of me, I know.

this looks smooth and rather pleasing but the character is off balance. It's leaning on its back way too much

I see what you mean. Perhaps if and when I get to animating him, I could have him lean forward and back. I have the idea of showing the core element of his personality (which is a kind of bouncy, happy-go-lucky kinda thing) in this idle animation.
...that, or I should try adjusting his footpaws and back a little.
And for comparison's sake, I'll show a 'full' sprite sheet of the same character I did a few years ago. I will be trying to recreate some of these poses in my new, more refined style.

Dunno whether I solved the balance issue, but I gave him a cuter, rounder belly

in case of doubt, flip the sprite horizontally. it will reveal balance issues, if there's any.

By no means finished. I'm tackling his tail first because it seems like the hardest part to me.

looking cute so far! i like how the colors aren't too vibrant, like how the white is more of an off-white/very bright grey
